There is nothing better than being in the outdoors. The sights and sounds of nature seem to speak to us on a completely different level. The opportunity to escape our everyday lives, high stress traffic, and simply "be" is like a recharge to the soul. It is a fundamental need for many of us in our lives. I personally feel the most grounded when I'm out in nature. The best thing is that you don't even have to really go anywhere to find nature. Your local park, walk trail, or even your yard can provide some sense of being in nature. I love traveling to new and exciting locations, but I also love to just be in my own space at home. Especially when its super-hot and it's hard to find the motivation to get out there.
So, while I'm often out shooting pictures somewhere in this grand world we call home, I love to stop and sit on the porch. I enjoy watching the local birds play out their little daily soap operas. I know most of them by sight now as they return every year and they've gotten used to my "stalking with camera". Each has their own personality. I particularly enjoy the Hummingbirds. They always have the most drama going on. One female in particular is extremely opinionated and she's not shy about informing the world when things aren't right. She lets me know when the feeders need changing by getting right up in my face. She is little but she is fierce. We refer to her as The Queen. She's been with us at least 2 seasons now and her sassiness always puts a smile on my face. Her mate is quiet and a bit reserved. He enjoys playing in the water spray from the hose or sprinkler. He keeps a bit of distance but follows me around the yard as I water most mornings. There are 3 other pairs in our area that visit as well. They are not near as social as the two I mentioned, but they are welcome guests all the same.
So if you are looking for a little inspiration or a bit of peace, as the saying goes; "There's no place like home." Sometimes what you need is in your very own back yard, local park, bike trail, or even your local zoo. The biggest take away is that you don't have to go very far to have your own slice of nature. Think about adding a bird feeder or some pretty flowers to attract some outdoor wildlife. Just remember to be respectful of them and their space as they share yours.
