Capturing Moments: A Portrait of Brett and Jasper

For years, Brett and I have worked side by side behind the camera at Diamond Double S Photography. Lately, he’s been pouring that same creativity into writing novels and screenplays. When he was invited to do an author interview, it was the perfect excuse to turn the camera around. I wanted to create portraits that reflected both sides of who he is.
A Journey Through Words and Images
Brett has written western mysteries, adventure stories, and books for young readers. But before any of that, he was—and still is—a horseman. His love for horses is woven into his stories, making them rich and relatable.
When an interviewer recently asked for photographs to accompany an upcoming feature, I knew I didn't want to photograph him sitting behind a desk with a stack of books. That isn’t Brett.

His stories are inspired by the people, places, and animals he’s known. Horses have been part of that journey, so it only made sense that they would be part of these images too.
A Morning on the Ranch
We spent the morning doing what we normally do—walking around the ranch, moving from one spot to another, and watching the weather roll in. Jasper, our loyal companion, did what he does best: stand quietly until it was his turn to shine.

Some of my favorite photographs are the ones where neither Brett nor Jasper seem to realize the camera is there. They’re relaxed, comfortable, and exactly who they are every other day of the week.
The Art of Imperfection
As photographers, we sometimes get caught up trying to create the perfect image. Perfect light. Perfect pose. Perfect expression. But portraits don’t have to be perfect to be meaningful. Sometimes the best portrait simply shows someone where they’re most at home.
For Brett, that’s in a saddle. For Jasper, it’s hanging out with his rider.

And for me, it was a chance to tell a story without a single written word.
The Connection Between Man and Horse
The bond between Brett and Jasper is palpable. It’s a relationship built on trust and understanding. Each time they ride together, they communicate in a language that transcends words. This connection is what I aimed to capture in our photos.
The gentle way Brett interacts with Jasper speaks volumes. It’s not just about riding; it’s about companionship. Each moment spent together is a testament to their shared experiences.
The Beauty of Natural Moments
When we shoot, I always strive to capture those natural moments. The ones that happen when people forget the camera is there. It’s in these instances that true emotion shines through.
Brett and Jasper have a rhythm that’s unique to them. Whether it’s a gentle nudge or a soft whinny, their interactions are filled with warmth. I want to showcase that in every photograph.
Why Photography Matters
Photography is more than just taking pictures. It’s about preserving memories and telling stories. Each click of the shutter captures a moment in time that can never be replicated.
For Brett, his stories come alive through his writing. For me, they come alive through my lens. Together, we create a tapestry of experiences that resonate with others.
Conclusion: A Lasting Legacy
As we wrapped up our session, I felt a sense of fulfillment. We had created images that not only reflect Brett’s journey as a writer but also his deep connection with Jasper.
These photographs are more than just images; they are a celebration of life, love, and the stories we share. I hope they inspire others to cherish their own moments, whether with pets or loved ones.
In the end, it’s all about capturing those fleeting moments that make life beautiful. Let’s continue to celebrate them, one photograph at a time.
