Why I Love Black Background Dog Portraits

Some photographs are about where they've been. Others are about who they are.

As much as I love photographing dogs out in a field, on a trail, or standing beside the people who love them, there's something special about a black background portrait. It strips away everything except what matters most.

The dog.

No distractions. No clutter. No wondering where your eye should go. Just a portrait that lets their personality take center stage.

One of the things I hear most often is, "My dog won't sit still long enough for something like that."

The truth is, they don't have to.

Some of my favorite portraits have come from dogs who were convinced the session was one big play date. Others belonged to old souls who were content to sit quietly and watch the world go by. Every dog is different, and that's exactly the point. I don't want every portrait to look the same. I want it to look like your dog.

The head tilt that always makes you laugh. The ears that seem to have a mind of their own. The little gray whiskers that remind you just how many years you've shared together. Those are the things worth remembering.

People also assume black backgrounds are only for black dogs, but that's far from the truth. Rich chocolate Labs, fluffy white Samoyeds, golden retrievers, spotted heelers, brindle bulldogs—they all create something a little different. The dark background simply lets their colors, textures, and expressions shine without competing with everything around them.

What I love most is how timeless these portraits feel. Trends come and go. Filters change. Editing styles evolve. But a simple portrait that captures your dog exactly as they are never goes out of style. Years from now, you'll still recognize that look in their eyes, that crooked smile, or the expression that always greeted you when you walked through the door. That's the kind of photograph I always try to create.

Not just something that earns a few likes on social media, but something you'll want hanging on your wall because it reminds you of a friend who made life a little better every single day.

Our dogs are with us for far too short a time. The photographs we make of them become part of their story—and ours.

If a black background portrait can help preserve even a small piece of that story, I'd say it's time well spent.
